Art Philosophy

The one word that captures my understanding of a good design is ‘compelling.’ When I see a design and I feel a connection that is almost emotional, I recognize it as a truly beautiful creation. However, my appreciation does not end at the aesthetics; I try to find out how the design contributes to the efficiency of the product.

When I look at a pair of basketball shoes, I focus not on just the design but how it contributes to the performance of an athlete. The high-top style of the show adds not only flare but also firm support for the player’s ankle, which is constantly stressed due to the fast pace of the game. I believe that there needs to be a balance between the elements of design and efficiency for a product to really shine. Another great example is the BeoLab 18, the Bang & Olufsen speakers that captivates both eyes and ears. Its vertically long cylindrical shape, accentuated by long but narrow wooden panels that encapsulate the speakers is a visual marvel that offers acoustic perfection. To me, these are what great design is: a delicate balance between aesthetics and efficiency.

As a designer, I still have a lot of skills to develop. I want to be better at expressing my art by developing better technique with my sketches and learning to more effectively use advanced programs to make realistic renderings of my work. With my designs I want to display a mixture of technology and art, ultimately to create designs that are artistic but functional at the same time.

Art Experience & Endeavors

Design Portfolio, Seoul, Korea; Artist                                                                                                Aug. 2013 – Present (11th – 12th)

Description: The general theme of the portfolio is the cross between technology and art. Although the portfolio consists of works that explore design in general, my main focus was to incorporate technology into my designs, to explore the intricate relationship between aesthetics and efficiency. In particular, the first three pieces focus on colors, the next three on temperature.

Motivation: The reason I chose to have a focus on technology was because that is what truly interests me. I get excited thinking about the future and new inventions, so I wanted to try to design my own products. Through the designs I try to express my interest in technology and also show the inspiration behind my work. I drew inspiration from both buildings and nature in the process.
